The Wall Art Fish Scale is crafted from New Zealand Rimu veneer board, this striking and beautiful wall art depicts contemporary Maori Kowhaiwhai patterns.

The kowhaiwhai is a traditional Maori pattern that is used in whakairo (carving) and art to enhance storytelling. This kowhaiwhai was designed to combine elements from four separate kowhaiwhai designs that represent different aspects of our research: biodiversity, biosecurity, land, and environment.

Kowhaiwhai were traditionally painted using three colours; Red represents warmth, blood and life, White represents purity and hope for the future, and Black represents the Earth.

Patterns varied tribally and regionally throughout New Zealand.
