The South Island Takahe is a flightless swamphen indigenous to New Zealand. They are the world's largest living rail ( a family of small-medium sized ground-dwelling birds with short wings, large feet and long toes.
The takahe have lived for about 8 millions years and are currently threatned- nationally vulnerable.
The North Island Takahe has become extinct.
As of October 2021 there were 440 Takahe in New Zealand
